THE SUN SET ON THE horizon and numerous stars scattered across the night sky. Destin slept undisturbed for the entire day.
Gideon checked on him, making sure everything was being properly handled before continuing his walk around the castle. His mind was still scattered while he attempted to gather his thoughts towards a logical solution to the chaos.
He gazed out of the stained-glass window at the garden down below. Gideon admired the stream which flowed freely around the entire garden, naturally watering it. His attention was grabbed by movement along one of the paths. With a bit of surprise, he spotted the king taking a moonlit stroll through the garden. Gideon made his way downstairs and out the main doors to join him.
The walls loomed above them, protecting them and the castle from the outside world. The garden itself was a hidden paradise. The mixture of flowers, shrubbery and trees was beautifully plotted and spread around the entire garden. The king himself was managing and pruning a bush near the stream. Gideon approached, but waited to be invited.
The king paid no attention to Gideon, as he focused on the blooming pink rose which he carefully cut and cleaned. âYou know, of all the insanity in the world, it is the moments like this which makes me believe we still have peace,â he said to Gideon, while still carefully snipping away. One final snip, as the frail branch fell to the ground and he looked over to Gideon, âWere you ever one for gardening?â
Gideon smiled and walked up to the king in discussion, âIt has always been one of my loves. As a Highborn you are tied to specific elements and earth is my strongest. Always has been.â He motioned to the bush of roses, âMay I?â
The king nodded and stepped back a little to provide the proper room. âNature is the finest beauty the gods and goddesses blessed us with. Laric gives Highbornâs the rare gift to create and mold as he does.â
His eyes glowed like emeralds in the noonday sun. He carefully guided his hands around the rosebush as a thin tree rose above the bush. The branches reached outward and sprouted thick azure leaves which matched the richness of a sunny day. Bulbs began to appear throughout the thicket of leaves until they began to bloom one at a time, revealing a flower exalted above all other flowers. It's fullness in color and beauty radiated unlike anything the king had seen prior.
Gideon had finished and took a step back to return to the king. âIt is the Star of Amaryllis, a rather rare flower, but my favorite.â
The king moved closer to the tree to get a better view, âAstonishing. In all my years, I could not imagine such a flower.â He turned to face Gideon, âThank you, truly.â
âIt will stay in bloom while magic is near, probably why I havenât seen much of it in my travels.â Gideon said, âI do appreciate the hospitality, it hasnât been the easiest time for anyone, but thank you.
